Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine and evaluate the vitamin D and Calcium perception level in the treatment of osteoporosis of Korean postmenopausal women.
Methods: This study is designed to investigate the 360 osteoporosis patients over 55 years of age in five major cities such as Seoul, Daejeon, Gwangju, Daegu, and Busan, during August 22 through September 18, 2007.
Results: In this study, 97.5% of patients believed that the major risk factor for osteoporosis is calcium and 88.6% believed in Vitamin D. Patients often believe that they are obtaining sufficient calcium and vitamin D, 68.6% and 62.5% respectively, through their healthy diet. The results from perception of importance factor for healthy bone indicate that the calcium was recognized as the most important factor with 8.9 and exercise, vitamin D, and Diet in sequence with 8.6, 8.1, and 6.5 respectively (unit: Mean, min1¡max10, P-value£¼0.001).
Conclusion: The totality of the evidence in important factor of osteoporosis indicates that the patients¡¯ perception level for vitamin D is lower than calcium. Therefore, it is imperative to augmenting patient knowledge about the calcium and particularly for vitamin D and osteoporosis treatment through appropriate education.
